L’Oréal, IFF and Givaudan: among global leaders in tackling climate change

Several key players in the beauty and personal care industry have been picked out as leaders when it comes to tackling climate change by the new CDP scoring system.

CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) is an international, nonprofit organisation that provides a global system for companies and cities to share environmental information. It aims to motivate companies to disclose their impacts on the environment and natural resources, and to take action to reduce negative impacts.

L’Oréal, Interational Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) and Givaudan are among those who came out as achieving strong profiles regarding climate change, winning places on the A and A- list by the CDP.

L’Oréal: climate and water

L’Oréal, a member of the CDP since 2002, was this year awarded an A ranking for its carbon footprint and a score of 99/100 for the transparency of its policies, according to the beauty giant. 

“We are very proud of this renewed recognition that encourages us to go further and to accelerate L’Oréal’s transition to a low carbon business”,​ said Jean-Paul Agon, Chairman and CEO of L’Oréal.

L’Oréal has committed to reduce by 60% the CO2 emissions from its production by 2020, calculated in absolute terms and using a 2005 baseline.

L’Oréal announced it had already achieved a key milestone at the end of 2015: the group reduced its CO2 emissions from production by 56% for the 2005-2015, despite a 26% increase in production over the same period.

“This achievement is due to an ambitious strategy of improving energy efficiency across facilities, increasing the use of renewable energy, and developing low carbon innovations​,” the company says.

The multinational has also just been awarded a place on the CDP’s Water A List too.

IFF: second consecutive year

IFF also made the climate A list, noting this is the second year running that it has been recognised by the CDP.

The fragrance company notes it is among just 9% of the CDP’s participating corporations in making the A grade.

“As stewards of tomorrow, we embrace our responsibility to lead positive transformational changes toward a regenerative, healthy and abundant world,”​ said Andreas Fibig, Chairman and CEO.

Givaudan: A-

Givaudan, another fragrance player, announced it earned an A- grade in the rankings this year, and is country leader for Switzerland.

“Givaudan’s performance in reducing carbon emissions continues to be industry-leading. We fully support CDP’s ongoing efforts to increase the quality and transparency of industry disclosure and challenge companies to keep up with evolving best practices in sustainability reporting,​” said Joe Fabbri, Head of Global EHS and Sustainability.
