Clariant dedicated a day to the role of sustainability in the speciality chemicals industry at its Frankfurt-based innovation centre yesterday.

According to representatives for the specialty chemicals supplier, the event was established to examine the role of greener processes as well as providing insight into the company’s contribution to a 'sustainable society'.

Clariant reports around 150 participants attended the keynote presentations which focused on sustainable development trends and provided a framework to larger societal context.

Speakers included CEO Hariolf Kottmann, head of the company's industrial & consumer specialties Christian Vang and guest speaker Klaus Töpfer, executive director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies.

Highlights throughout the day included a special sustainability focus on India and China, insights on value chain and supply chain collaboration, and the results of Clariant’s screening of the sustainability performance of its product portfolio.

'Good manufacturing processes'

Earlier this year, Clariant's cosmetic chemical production at manufacturing sites in and beyond Europe were certified for Good Manufacturing Processes.

The company’s ingredient production facilities in Mexico, the US, Europe and Asia were awarded the distinction from the FDA and the European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients.

The European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients has protocol in place to safeguard the internal cosmetics market at a high level, making certain the industry does what it can to protect human health.

This is, in turn, designed to ensure that the market continues to function.

The ISO 22716 “is intended to assist industry and other stakeholders in identifying the standards and issues that can affect the quality of cosmetic products,” reads the document.

Simplifying procedures all along the production chain

Accordingly, Clariant customers are subject to the same regulations to compete successfully in the cosmetic manufacturing business.

So the fact that the company has the FDA’s ISO 22716 certification for all U.S. cosmetics-ingredients sites, and the corporation's 22 dedicated cosmetics-ingredient sites in Europe, Asia, and Mexico have certification from the European Federation for Cosmetic Ingredients, simplifies procedures all along the production chain.

"For our customers, meeting this standard is no longer just a product benefit but has become a requirement of doing business," John Clarke, regional head, Clariant Industrial & Consumer Specialties Business – North America, told the press.
